Hálito is a site-specific installation that explores breath as a material trace of our interdependence. Usually invisible and experienced as something deeply intimate, breath is transformed here into a shared substance moving between bodies and their environment.
The installation brings together slow-motion video, laboratory equipment altered through artistic intervention, and hand-blown glass vessels, weaving a dialogue between scientific and sculptural languages. Two glass devices hold condensed breath gathered from more than 200 people over eighteen months. In one, the collected breath is kept in constant motion; in the other, it rests after being mixed, revealing two distinct states of the same shared matter. Through this process, an ephemeral, private act becomes a tangible, collective imprint left by a multitude of bodies.
A generative video completes the installation. Four sensors track the room’s activity, temperature, CO₂, and relative humidity. A computer processes this data in real time, translating it into an evolving digital image — a collective breath shaped by the physical presence and breathing of the audience.
Through these diverse forms, Hálito blurs the boundaries between the individual and the collective, questioning what we consider our own when our bodies are constantly exchanging matter with one another and with the world around us.
